Jacqueline B Cohen aka DJ Jedeye Jaxx is a multi– talented entertainer, a DJ, MC, and dancer. Jacqueline grew up on soulful music including Jazz, African Jazz, Cuban and Afro Jazz, funk \, Motown, soul, and R and B with the radio on and with a single old turn table that was born before she was. Jacqueline danced around her house and moved all her furniture so she could try out her new moves. When she was a kid playing her tapes she would play two at the same time trying to match, a strong indication she would be become a DJ. When she was 14 years old she was able to talk her way into getting into clubs where she saw La India one night.
Jacqueline also studied ballet, modern and Afro Caribbean dance. Jacqueline has travelled around the world to places such as Senegal, West Africa, Brazil, and Trinidad which has influenced her dance styles. As a young adult she would hang out in the west village in NYC and listen to old disco and house music tapes. When she went to BMCC to study dance she met a promoter who told her about Club Shelter and UN Sound Factory Bar parties where she experienced the best music in the world. Once that happened she was hooked. She was an old soul and was the youngest in these underground clubs. House music soothed her soul. Later on she met a few DJs and influenced her to DJ. She bought used turntables and a mixer and began collecting vinyl. She hosted a radio show at Hunter College WHCH called the House of Soul while she was pursing her BA. in dance.
Since then she followed another dream to help people in need by using the arts to rehabilitate homeless people, children at risk, and mentally ill patients. While working as a probation officer for the youth, Jacqueline focused on using the arts to motivate and empower the young people. From that career Jacqueline realized that she really wanted to go back focus on broadcasting and music to eventually use that to inspire and educate the youth.
She then studied broadcasting and her hosted her own radio show, and brought back the House of Soul at WKRB 90.3 FM. This lead her to go back to mixing and start playing in the clubs. For about a year of getting back into it, she looks back at the pioneers of djaying such as, Larry Levan, Frankie Knuckles, Timmy Regisford, Kim Lightfoot, David Mancuso, and so much more. Being a DJ is like going back to school, but it’s more fun. Jacqueline djayed at the Fire Lounge for a monthly hustle party, Balmir Dance Studio for hustle parties, the Happiness Lounge, and various house dance practice sessions at PMT studio and EXPG. There have been many DJ’s that have helped Jacqueline get back to the djaying field such as Lamont, the walking music encyclopedia, gave her a lesson in not just djaying but the lesson of life through music, Frankie Paradise, who is her big brother, teachers her how to teach her self. There are so many DJ’s that she learns from everyday just by listening such as Kim Lightfoot, who she has always talked about since dancing in the basement of the Sound Factory bar. Jacqueline wants to keep this music going while making people happy.
When Jaxx is not on the wax she trains in Hustle, Chinese Pole, Trapeze and other acrobatic works. Even when the music is not on, it continues to spin in her mind.
