Bo Irvine began his civil service career in 1971 as a firefighter with Naval Air Station Barbers Point Crash Fire Rescue, working his way through the ranks to become the youngest Fire Captain in the Federal Fire Department then Assistant Chief.
After serving 20 plus honorable years with the Federal Fire Department, Bo was hired as a Fire Protection Specialist for Marine Corps Base Hawaii (MCBH), where he was an active participant in rewriting the Marine Corps Fire Protection Order and Wildlife Fire Fighting Plan. In the mid 1990s, Bo was promoted to the position of Occupational Health & Safety Director for MCB Hawaii. Over his tenure as Safety Director, Bo was responsible for initiating the use of civilian Safety Specialists in Marine Corps tactical operations. By doing so, he and his team radically redefined the concept of the Safety Specialist and encouraged commanders in the field toinclude the civilian Safety Specialist in their mission planning and execution. In addition to redefining the use of the Safety Specialists as a deployable asset, Bo identified the need to improve the safety program in garrison. Providing training to his Safety Specialists in areas such as: Confined Space, Forklift Operations, Electrical Safety, Machine Guarding, Explosive
Safety, Respiratory Protection, and a host of other specializations. Bo's vision of making MCB Hawaii the "safest" Marine Corps installation garnered four Secretary of the Navy Safety Excellence Awards (FY96, FY02, FY03 and FY08), and six Marine Corps Center of Safety
Excellence Awards (FY96, FY02, FY03, FY04, FY05 and FY08). Was a member of the Assistant Commandant Executive Safety Board from 2001 to 2011.
