Beyond the Story: The Mission and Medicine of Stage & Screen

Nicky’s Closet
Written & Directed by Mario A. Campanaro.
with Mark Sullivan, Holly Hubbell & Julian Totah.

Objective: Following the performance of Nicky’s Closet, we invite our audience to share their reflections, experiences, and questions about the play while using its story as a springboard to explore the universal human experiences that connect us all, including grief, secrecy, identity, shame, belonging, love, depression, suicide loss, and the complexities of family relationships. Rather than focusing solely on the making of the play, the conversation will also examine how silence, truth, and our fundamental need for connection shape our inner lives, influence our behavior, and inform the choices we make in an effort to better understand ourselves, one another, and the emotional wounds that shape our lives. Together, we will explore theatre and film not only as forms of entertainment, but as powerful mediums for investigating humanity, fostering empathy, encouraging meaningful, honest, and sometimes difficult dialogue, and creating stories that continue to resonate long after the curtain falls or the screen fades to black, reminding us that we are not alone in our experiences and that healing often begins when what has been carried in silence is finally given a voice. The discussion will also explore the creative journey of developing stories for the stage and mindfully adapting them for film, allowing deeply human stories to reach broader audiences while preserving the emotional truth at their core.
